The list of MDBA advisors has been refreshed.

The Advisory Committee on Social, Economic, and Environmental Sciences (ACSEES) has undergone a membership refresh following the expiration of certain members' terms. ACSEES plays a central role in providing independent, strategic advice to the Murray–Darling Basin Authority, ensuring the Basin Plan's implementation.

In August 2023, Adj Prof William (Bill) Young assumed the role of ACSEES Chair, following a transparent recruitment process aligned with the APS Legislative Framework.

The Committee saw further changes in membership as several members' terms concluded, prompting an external recruitment round in August–September 2023.

The recruitment focused on candidates with expertise in water-related science, broad subject knowledge, familiarity with Basin-specific issues, and prior advisory committee experience.

The MDBA presented shortlisted candidates to the Authority at its 176th meeting, considering factors such as experience, expertise, and committee balance.

The staggered terms of ACSEES members aim to facilitate periodic turnover, incorporating fresh perspectives while maintaining collective memory leading up to the 2026 Basin Plan Review.

The MDBA encourages ongoing consideration for additional appointments to address any emerging skills gaps within the Committee.

The current ACSEES lineup includes Chair Adj Prof Bill Young, along with Prof Nick Bond, Prof Sam Capon, Assoc Prof Avril Horne, Prof Sue Jackson, Assoc Prof Rebecca Nelson, Prof Anne Poelina, and Prof Mike Stewardson.

Established in 2012 under Section 203 of the Water Act 2007 (Cth), ACSEES has been a vital source of independent advice on Basin Plan implementation, scientific initiatives, and the broader Murray–Darling Basin context.

The committee comprises experts in hydrology, ecology, environmental sciences, climate sciences, social and economics, First Nations and Cultural values, as well as water governance and law.
