Funding is being provided for a new water treatment plant in WA.

A joint investment will fund a new water treatment plant in Busselton, aimed at addressing growing water supply challenges.

The project, backed by both the Australian and Western Australian Governments, aims to improve water quality, reduce pressure on coastal bores, and increase supply capacity by 20 per cent.

The Busselton Water Supply Improvement Project is designed to respond to issues including saltwater intrusion, declining rainfall, and rising demand.

Busselton’s treatment plant is one of three water infrastructure projects across Western Australia receiving $57.8 million from the 2024-25 Federal Budget, with funds allocated through the National Water Grid Fund

These projects are designed to reduce nitrate levels, minimise bore reliance, and build advanced recycled water treatment plants.

Western Australia’s Water Minister, Simone McGurk, said the project is significant in tackling climate change impacts.

“We know we live in a drying climate, and that is why we're investing in innovative solutions,” she said.
