Hay sale backs WA works
Recycled water is helping to fund community projects in the Kimberley.
Upgrades to a BMX track, repairs to an iconic outdoor cinema, and a new ice machine for a local football club are among thirteen projects receiving nearly $80,000 from Water Corporation's 2024 Kimberley Community Grants Scheme.
This initiative supports grassroots organisations with individual grants up to $10,000, enhancing community life in the Kimberley.
Now in its ninth year, the scheme has allocated more than $666,000 to 118 community projects since 2016.
Funding comes from the sale of Rhodes grass hay, which is cultivated using recycled water from the Broome North Water Resource Recovery Facility.
Water Minister Simone McGurk, joined by Water Corporation staff and Lions Club of Broome representatives, presented the grants in Broome and Kununurra.
Among this year's recipients, the Kununurra Picture Gardens will use its $10,000 grant to repair a broken projector, ensuring the continuation of its monthly outdoor movie screenings.
Kimberley Action Sports will upgrade the Kununurra BMX track to national standards with nearly $8,000, while the Ord River Magpies Football Club will purchase a new ice machine to treat injuries and keep players cool during games.
Other beneficiaries include the Broome Town Band, which will expand its repertoire with new licensing rights, the Wyndham Historical Society, which will erect a monument to the town's industrial heritage, and Broome's Native Animal Rescue, which will install security lighting at a turtle rehabilitation facility.
More information on the scheme is available at the Water Corporation's website.
