Hobart upgrade complete
Work to upgrade a section of Hobart’s main water distribution pipelines is now complete.
TasWater has announced that more than 1km of new pipeline at New Norfolk has been connected to existing infrastructure, with affected roads resurfaced and paddocks reseeded.
The $5.3 million project is part of the group’s $1.1 billion capital works program over the next four years.
Originally constructed in 1937 and commissioned in 1939, the pipeline section had failed in the past and caused interruptions to water supply, mainly due to the age of the infrastructure.
TasWater Delivery Manager Chris Le Grange says renewing the infrastructure will increase the reliability of the pipeline and reduce unplanned service interruptions.
“This section of the Lake Fenton Pipeline is 1.3km long and feeds water from the pristine Mt Field National Park to 20 per cent of our customers in the greater Hobart area,” he said.
“From this pipeline, water travels around 120 kilometres to North, South and West Hobart, Lenah Valley, Chigwell, Glenorchy, Montrose, and Berriedale.
“By completing the replacement of this part of the pipeline, we are ensuring a critical asset remains operational and can continue to supply our customers with clean and safe drinking water,” Mr Le Grange said.
