Experts have given an inside tour of the water recycling facilities at some of our top sporting venues.

IVWater has taken fourth-year civil and environmental engineering students through the machinery that supplies the Melbourne Sports Precinct, including the MCG and Tennis Centre.

The facilities are located underneath the Yarra Park, and are now up and running after an 18-month build time.

The water recycling facilities treat up to 180 million litres of water a year from the local sewage network to Class A recycled water standards.

The water is used primarily for irrigation and in toilets.

Additionally, a large-scale stormwater harvesting scheme is underway, hoping to gain more water from previously unused supplies.

IVWater says it hopes to gain an extra 40 million litres for irrigation and toilets from stormwater.

Recycled supplies should soon account for about 60 per cent of the precinct’s needs.
