Marine scientist John Gunn has been announced as the new CEO of the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS).

Federal Innovation Minister Senator Kim carr announced Mr Gunn’s appointment will take effect on 28 November.

“I congratulate Mr Gunn on his appointment and am sure his leadership will continue to support the internationally renowned work carried out at the Institute,” Senator Carr said.

“Mr Gunn’s background in marine science – with particular expertise in the fisheries area – experience on boards and his understanding of government will help him lead AIMS through the challenges of the coming five years.

“Mr Gunn is already an active member of Australia’s marine community and I look forward to his contribution to AIMS in his new role.”

Mr Gunn has held senior positions in the marine science sector for more than 10 years and has advised the government on marine science issues. He has served on the Oceans Policy Science Advisory Group and other boards and committees.

“I would also like to thank Dr Ian Poiner, whom Mr Gunn is replacing as the Institute’s CEO.  Dr Poiner has served AIMS well for the past seven years and has been a champion for the Institute and marine science generally.  I wish him all the best for the future,” Senator Carr said.
