The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) says it has made substantial progress in the lead-up to a Basin Plan Review scheduled for 2026.

In April, the MDBA hosted the inaugural Basin Plan Leadership Summit, an event designed to bring together stakeholders and discuss the future of the Basin Plan.

June saw the launch of the Early Insights Paper, offering initial observations and guiding the ongoing review process.

Chief Executive Andrew McConville has highlighted the Authority’s efforts to foster relationships with First Nations communities, noting the importance of integrating their perspectives into water management strategies.

“We have been out on Country resetting our relationships with First Nations people,” McConville stated.

A significant aspect of the MDBA’s work involves reviewing sustainable diversion limits. These limits are crucial for balancing water use between human needs and environmental sustainability.

McConville also emphasised the role of science and research in the review process, announcing an investment of nearly $100 million into scientific programs.

Looking ahead, the MDBA plans to maintain its transparent approach, providing regular progress updates. The next update is scheduled for early 2025.

This video outlines McConville’s thoughts on the MDBA’s progress from January to June 2024.
