The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) has launched its Roadmap to the 2026 Basin Plan Review.

As part of the first review of the Basin Plan since its establishment in 2012, the roadmap, unveiled at the annual River reflections water conference in Narrabri, outlines the necessary steps to gather scientific data, develop policies, and engage with communities for sustainable water management in the Basin and its surrounding areas in the coming decade.

Sir Angus Houston, Chair of the MDBA, says the review will focus on crucial topics such as climate change, sustainable water limits, regulatory design, and the connection of First Nations to the Basin.

“This will be an opportunity to shape the future of Basin water management into the 2030s, and everyone who wants to share their knowledge, views and ideas will have an opportunity to do so,” he said.

Sir Angus further stressed the importance of addressing complex water management issues and ensuring the long-term well-being of Australia's natural assets.

He acknowledged the extensive work required until 2026 to ensure the review's foundation on the latest scientific research and practical experiences.

Sir Angus assured stakeholders that the review would consider potential changes and maintain a harmonious interplay among all aspects of the Basin Plan, with the goal of preserving the health of the rivers for future generations.

The Roadmap also includes checkpoints to assess the effectiveness of existing measures and explore areas where adjustments might be necessary.

The MDBA says it is committed to actively listening and learning from stakeholders throughout the process.

Regular updates on the progress will be provided every six months to keep the public informed about the ongoing work.

Sir Angus said the release of the Roadmap is just the beginning of an extensive series of conversations, and warned that water availability for irrigators and environmental purposes would decrease in the future due to climate change.
