Local business leaders have welcomed the allocation of an additional $87.5 million to the Cairns Water Security Stage 1 project in the 2024-25 Queensland Budget.

This funding increase, although less than the $128.5 million requested by the Cairns Regional Council, marks a significant financial relief for ratepayers.

Local business lobby Advance Cairns says it will urge the Federal Government to match this investment.

The State Government's total commitment to the Cairns Water Security project now stands at $195 million, with $40 million to be delivered in the 2024-25 financial year.

This project is a priority for the local council, reflecting the community's need for a reliable water supply in a growing region.

The Cairns Regional Council expressed gratitude for the increased funding and recognised the collective effort from local members and advocates such as Advance Cairns, Cairns Chamber of Commerce, RDA Tropical North, TTNQ, and FNQROC.

The council has also called on Federal Government support to fully realise the water security project, ensuring the city's water supply for the future.
