NT Government rejects Daly River dam proposal
The Northern Territory Government has rejected calls by the Federal Opposition to dam the Daly Rive, with Territory Environment Minister Karl Hampton urging the Country Liberal Party to “respect the science and reject plans by the Federal Coalition to dam the Daly River”.
“(Territory Opposition leader) Terry Mills needs to do the right thing, stand up for Territorians and tell Tony Abbott and Nigel Scullion to back off and drop their dream of damming the Daly so it doesn’t become an environmental nightmare," Mr Hampton said.
Mr Hampton has warned that the damming of the river would have the following consequences:
- Fish stocks will be reduced;
- Iconic wildlife species such as the pig nose turtle will suffer; and
- Erosion will be widespread, choking the river.
