Tasmania announces solid irrigation progress
The Tasmanian Government has announced it is closing in on the half way mark with its extensive irrigation program, with some of the biggest projects close to completion.
“We are getting on with the job of delivering very significant irrigation projects around Tasmania which will set up our primary industries sector for generations to come,” State Minister for Primary Industries and Water Bryan Green said.
Mr Green said he was confident construction of the $88 million Midlands Irrigation Scheme, the largest ever in Tasmania, would start in the first half of next year.
“Three new schemes are now operating, another is under construction and two more are expected to begin within the next six months."
Mr Green said well over $100 million of public and private money had been invested in the schemes so far.
“Almost 300 farmers have purchased rights to the schemes which will provide water surety and the ability to diversify and grow their business."
Mr Green said construction of the $12 million Lower South Esk scheme was expected to start early next year while a business case for the South East scheme is being progressed.
“Feasibility studies and business cases have been prepared or are in the process of being developed for a further six potential irrigation projects across the State,” Mr Green said.
