WaterNSW planning dam works
WaterNSW is upgrading the five embankment dams of Lake Cargelligo.
A combination of historic flood events and more recent flooding in 2016 have severely impacted on the condition of the embankments.
Temporary works have been completed which have successfully managed any potential risk in the interim, however the new upgrades will ensure the Lake Cargelligo community continues to benefit from the lake’s storage, including long-term water security for town supply and irrigation, as well as recreation activities.
“The project’s key objectives are to reduce the risk of internal and external erosion of the embankment dams and reduce the risk of impacts associated with wave erosion of those embankments,” says project manager Sarinda Wickramasinghe.
Mr Wickramasinghe said the project team has already completed geotechnical site investigations, early environmental investigations, and concept design.
Further design development, environmental assessment and an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment work will progress through to the end of 2021.
Broader community and stakeholder engagement will be held in August/September, Covid permitting.
Advertising for future engagement will occur via the WaterNSW website and local media. Onsite construction is due to commence in mid-2022.
