Geotechnical investigations have begun at Wivenhoe Dam, marking a significant step in the Wivenhoe Dam Improvement Project.

Queensland Water Minister Glenn Butcher recently visited the site to inspect the ongoing work conducted by engineering company GHD.

The investigations are focused on assessing the ground conditions and understanding the dam's foundations.

These works are considered essential for ensuring the dam's continued safety and effectiveness.

The project is slated to continue until late 2024, depending on weather and site conditions.

The Queensland Government has allocated $11.46 million in the 2024-25 budget for the planning work of the Wivenhoe Dam Improvement Program.

The current geotechnical investigations will contribute to an Options Analysis aimed at exploring technical options for the dam's upgrade.

“Wivenhoe Dam continues to operate safely and this work is vital to ensuring the dam can provide water security and flood mitigation benefits for years to come,” Butcher said.

The Wivenhoe Dam, constructed in 1984, is South East Queensland’s largest water storage facility, serving the Brisbane and Ipswich regions while also providing flood mitigation. Seqwater has pledged to provide ongoing updates to the community as the project progresses, with the full upgrade expected to be completed by 2035.
