Murray leadership shifts
The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is entering a new era of leadership.
Daryl Quinlivan AO has been appointed as the new Chair of the MDBA Board, taking over from Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston AK, AFC, who retires on 22 December 2024.
Mr Quinlivan’s four-year term begins on 23 December.
He brings extensive expertise in public service and water management, having served as Secretary of the former Department of Agriculture, a member of the Murray–Darling Basin Commission, and NSW Agriculture Commissioner.
Sir Angus, Chair since 2020, led efforts to rebuild trust and advance the Basin Plan through inclusive consultations and collaboration.
In addition, Rene Woods, the MDBA’s inaugural First Nations board member, has been reappointed for four more years, while Allison Mudford will replace Susan Madden, who steps down after serving the maximum eight years.
Environment and Water Minister Tanya Plibersek has underlined the importance of strong leadership for the Basin’s future.
“We are determined to deliver the Murray-Darling Basin Plan in full, and that is why it is so important that we have the right people for the job on the Authority Board,” she said.
Ms Plibersek commended Sir Angus for his leadership.
“The MDBA as an organisation has never been stronger. He stood above partisan debate, engendering trust in the MDBA as it implements the Basin Plan. I thank him for his excellent service and wish him all the best,” she said.
