An Australian-led study forecasts a significant global increase in the use of purified recycled water in drinking water supplies.

Consumption is expected to double over the next 25 years, according to research conducted by the Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA).

The analysis suggests that more than 55 million people could rely on purified recycled water by 2050.

The findings, derived from over two years of analysis and consultation with the international water sector, also indicate that over 100 cities may adopt the system to meet future water needs.

The study comes at a critical time as Australian states and cities examine alternative water sources to manage growing populations, the effects of climate change on rainfall, and the economic challenges posed by developing new water resources.

The data has been plotted on interactive maps that visualise the global growth of purified recycled water systems.

More information is available on the WSAA’s Water360 site, including details of projects to add purified recycled water for drinking (potable reuse) around the world.
