Some residents remain unable to connect to Kangaroo Island’s new $150 million desalination plant.

SA Water’s new desalination plant at Penneshaw is providing mains water to around 700 Kangaroo Island homes and businesses, but some residents have been left frustrated and disappointed.

The facility, with a capacity of two megalitres a day, was designed to boost water security following the 2019 - 2020 bushfires, which depleted the Middle River Reservoir.

While many properties are now connected, many have missed out, leaving some having to spend thousands of dollars a year on trucked water.

SA Water says no further connections are planned, with applications “on hold”.

Kangaroo Island Mayor Michael Pengilly has called for an urgent expansion, citing an unusually dry year that has forced farmers to cart water across the south coast.
