TasWater gets new chair
Kevin Young has been announced as TasWater’s new Chair, succeeding Dr Stephen Gumley AO, who will retire in November 2024 after six years in the role.
Young, currently a Board Director, takes over during a critical phase for TasWater as it embarks on new growth plans.
Wayne Johnston, Chief Owners’ Representative, has expressed full confidence in Young, citing his 40 years of experience in the Australian water and sewerage sector, including leadership roles at Hunter Water Corporation and Sydney Water Corporation.
“Kevin is the perfect Chair to lead TasWater in the next phase of its journey,” Johnston said.
Young, a Board member since 2019, called it a privilege to step into the role at such an important time.
“We have recently endorsed a bold and ambitious strategy for the next phase of growth,” he noted.
The plan includes a $1.9 billion capital program over the next five years, aimed at securing water resources, accommodating population growth, and meeting customer expectations.
TasWater’s future Price and Service Plan, due in June 2025, is set to be informed by the organisation’s largest-ever community engagement campaign, giving Tasmanians a say in shaping water and sewerage services.
Outgoing Chair Dr Gumley reflected on his tenure, noting milestones such as the completion of the Bryn Estyn Water Treatment Plant and the Selfs Point Sewer Transformation Project. He praised TasWater’s resilience during his time, saying; “I’m proud of the achievements of the Board and Executive Leadership Team”.
The selection process for the new Chair was conducted by a committee comprising council and State Government representatives following Gumley’s decision to retire.
