Hatchery & Water Quality Technician

 

We are currently seeking a Hatchery & Water Quality Technician to support our seasonal operations in the day to day aiding in the delivery of the production plan. This is a split role and will involve working from June to October in Hatchery and November to May in Water Quality. 

We are looking for someone who is a strong team player and is focused on maintaining a culture of safety for themself and others.

Proserpine

Our prawn farm is located halfway between Airlie Beach and Bowen - a very stunning area. You’ll be working 12-hour shifts across a 2/2/3 roster (which means you have 7 days off over a fortnight!!) which means you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy everything the Whitsunday region has to offer!

What does the role involve?

Due to its split nature, the role responsibilities and conditions will change, but as an overview, you can expect to be responsible for the following at some point throughout the year:

Microalgae Growth and Maintenance

  • Cultivate and monitor microalgae growth.
  • Feed larvae and conduct assessments.
  • Oversee broodstock breeding and performance, including water quality monitoring.

Water Quality Management

  • Perform water quality sampling, testing, and analysis.
  • Monitor and maintain our smart farming automated water quality monitoring system - the only system of its type in Australia's prawn farming industry.
  • Conduct intensive microalgae observations using microscopes.
  • Assist in water quality management of ponds.

Prawn Feeding

  • Conduct routine feeding of prawns.

Prawn Health Management

  • Perform routine overview and sampling of prawn health.
  • Identify, diagnose, and escalate prawn health issues.
  • Problem-solve health issues in a timely manner.

Equipment Disinfection and Maintenance

  • Clean and calibrate health equipment and instruments to ensure quality, accuracy, and performance.

General Animal Husbandry

  • Conduct routine overview of animal husbandry and health.
  • Escalate potential issues in a timely manner.

Requirements:

  • Fast learner, willing to learn
  • Aquaculture knowledge (desirable)
  • Reliable, resilient, flexible
  • Good communication skills
  • Mathematical aptitude
  • Ability to work independently, in a team, and under pressure
  • Current driver’s license and ability to commute for shifts
  • Prawn farming experience (highly desirable)
  • Australian working rights and the ability to pass a pre-employment medical assessment.
