The NSW and federal governments are investing an additional $41.1 million to improve drinking water quality and supply in regional communities, addressing long-standing issues in areas such as Yass, Cobar, and Bathurst.

For Yass, both governments will contribute $18.1 million each towards refurbishing existing and constructing new water treatment infrastructure.

The investment aims to resolve ongoing water quality issues, which have led to frequent boil water alerts.

According to a 2024 Yass Valley Council survey, 85 per cent of residents avoid tap water.

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro Kristy McBain says that the new treatment plant will be “a long-term solution for the community’s future”.

The Cobar region will receive an additional $3.5 million in federal funding to address failing infrastructure under the Nyngan to Cobar water project. This funding will replace two broken pump stations, improving water security and reliability.

In Bathurst, $1.4 million will be allocated to develop a business case identifying ways to address gaps between current water supply and community demand.

The case will explore options for using diverse water sources to ensure long-term water reliability.
